What inspired you to get into Rowing?
It was a very popular sport at School, my brother was in the first 8, and it had a lot of interest. I initially was not very good but grew a lot and started to produce good results. I was inspired by those ahead of me.
Who was your athlete inspiration and why?
In rowing, just before I started to go well - probably the great German single sculler – Thomas Lange, 2 x Olympic champion, perfect technician, no nonsense sort of guy, very intelligent. He acknowledged me once at a regatta!
Who is your personal inspiration and why?
Outside of rowing – Sir Peter Blake and Sir Edmund Hillary – mostly for the people they were in light of all their great achievements.
How do you think our athletes inspire New Zealand?
They achieve unbelievable feats. The standards keep getting higher, the medals harder to get. Our athletes keep lifting the benchmark. Sport is very important to NZ – it is one of our main ways to show who we are and what we stand for.
