Ian Ferguson and Paul MacDonald win K2 500 Gold, Los Angeles 1984
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics the New Zealand Kayaking teamwas unstoppable. Paul MacDonald and Ian Ferguson won the K2 500 by more than one second to add to Ferguson’s Gold in the K1 500 2 hours earlier and the K4 1000 Gold the next day. The New Zealand four became known in kayaking circles as the Dream Team. There were suggestions that their Olympic medals were “soft” because of the Eastern bloc boycott of the games, but Ferguson pointed out that they had beaten all the world’s leading paddlers in the months before the Olympics.
