New Zealand travel to the London Olympic Games 1948
London 1948
Travelling aboard the ‘Port Hobart’ , this team was the last New Zealand team to travel by ship to an Olympic Games.
Also aboard was Roy McKenzie (later Sir Roy) who filmed parts of the one month journey.
Olympian Harold Nelson said about life on ‘Port Hobart’
“most of us were seasick to start with. Crossing the Pacific, we rolled from side to side. And the running…! You’d run one way uphill and the next it was downhill. You couldn’t do much really, within the limitation we tried to train.”
